Practice 6: Working with Files

Objective:

After completing this practice you should understand how to copy and move files between folders and how to send a file to the desktop as a shortcut.  You also should also gain a basic understanding of some of the different types of files that are found on a Windows based computer.

Materials

  • Computer
  • Sample File-download to floppy disk

Procedure:

1.                  Open JAWS and then My Computer.

2.                  Place the sample floppy disk in the A: drive and then open the A: drive using My Computer and review its contents. Take your time and listen to the title bar and use INSERT + T if necessary to verify that you are in the right folder or drive.

3.                  There are two types of files on the floppy disk - .doc files which are used by Microsoft Word and .txt files which are basic text files which can be used in HJPAD or NOTEPAD.

4.                  Select the file called firstcopy.txt.

5.                  Use the APPLICATION key to open a context sensitive menu. On a typical desktop keyboard, the APPLICATION key is three keys to the right of the space bar.

6.                  Use the UP and DOWN ARROW to review the menu. The application key will always bring up a context sensitive menu. The menu changes according to what element has focus when you press the APPLICATION key.

7.                  Find COPY on the menu and press enter to select it.

8.                  Find and open the My Documents folder.

9.                  Use the APPLICATION key to open the context sensitive menu.

10.             Choose PASTE and then hit enter.

11.             Review the folder to find the pasted file.

12.             Open the A: drive. Find “firstcopy.txt”.

13.             The file is on both the A: drive and in the My Documents folder because you used copy. Copy makes a copy of the file you want.

14.             Select the file called firstmove.txt.

15.             Use the APPLICATION key to open the context sensitive menu.

16.             Find CUT on the menu and press enter to select it.

17.             Find and open the My Documents folder.

18.             Use the APPLICATION key to open the context sensitive menu.

19.             Choose PASTE to paste the file into the My Documents folder.

20.             Review the folder to find the pasted file.

21.             Open the A: drive. Try to find “firstmove.txt”.

22.             The file is no longer on the A: drive because you used the CUT command. The CUT command removes the file.

23.             Next  place an icon for a program on the desktop. By creating a shortcut on the desktop, it makes it easier to find and open frequently used programs.

24.             Find the file path c:\program files\windowsnt\accessories.

25.             Locate the file wordpad.exe.  A file with an .exe extension is a program file.

26.             Once wordpad.exe is selected, open the context sensitive menu using the APPLICATION key and choose “send to” and then “Desktop (Create Shortcut).

27.             Minimize all applications using WINDOWS + M and search for the newly created shortcut on the desktop.

28.             Select the new shortcut, but don’t open it.

29.             First, you are going to create your own personal hot key combination that you can use to open this program.

30.             Open the context sensitive menu and arrow down to Properties and hit enter.

31.             Once in Properties, review the properties dialog box using the TAB key. The Target field is the complete path of the program file, wordpad.exe. The “Start In” field shows the path of the folder where the program file resides. The Shortcut Key field shows the key combination that will automatically open this program, without having to find it on the desktop or in a menu. The Run field shows how you would like the program to appear when it opens. There are three choices Normal, Minimized and Maximized. With JAWS it is always best to open a program in a Maximized window.

32.             Using the TAB key move the focus to the shortcut key field. Create a Shortcut Key combination by pressing CTRL + ALT + W. (If this combination is already in use, the field will continue to say “None” If this happens, try a different combination that you are sure is not in use on this particular computer).

33.             Move focus to the Run field and use the combo box to change its setting to “Maximize”.

34.             Select OK and press enter, which will close the dialog box and save the changes.

35.             Minimize all applications.

36.             Open WordPad using the programmed Short Cut Key you just created.
